HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FOR THE MILLAU BRIDGE
|
STERN took an active role in the construction of the new Millau viaduct, specifically by making the hydraulic cylinders ordered by ENERPAC that were used both to launch the bridge outward and to set down its pillars. The work basically consisted of supplying more than 250 cylinders - of 5 different types - that are needed to build this stunning piece of engineering.
At 343 metres high and 2.460 metres long, Millau is the world's tallest bridge. The viaduct, which was built in just three years, rests on seven arrow-shaped pillards and links the Paris-Côte d'Azur route through the Massif Central. French engineer Michel Virlogeux and British architect Norman Foster are the two men responsible for this majestic piece of architecture. |
